“I'm good at my job, so why am I struggling to lead?” A leadership coaching perspective

There is a sharp difference between being good at the work and creating space for your team to work more effectively. Leadership is not just about guiding the pack but also helping them develop their own voice, which helps a leader to confide in the team during stressful times. You may think, “I’m competent, I have clarity, but why does leadership make me feel I don’t belong?” You may also encounter situations where employees may test your leadership. However, as a leader, it is not your job to always have answers or be the smartest in the room; rather, empower employees to combat challenges. In this blog, we will explore how leadership coaching sets the direction for competing interests and builds a strong mindset.

You don’t need to have all the answers

As a leader, you don’t have to solve every problem your team brings to you to prove you deserve the position. Your job is to create ownership, not dependence. The reason why the position feels overwhelming is that you try to control what’s beyond your expertise, and this is exactly what stresses you out and makes you feel undeserving. You were promoted to the position because of your performance at work, not because you were born a leader or always had answers to every problem. Shift your mindset from “Do I deserve this” to “What does my team expect from me?”

A leader’s perception influences how a team treats their leaders. A 2024 study looked at 81 sales teams and compared how leaders evaluated their skills and how their team members evaluated them. A good leader is someone who naturally projects leadership qualities while being open to learning more, and they don’t spend time proving it; rather focus on creating a space where employees can grow along with them.

What should you do instead? From self-doubt to responsibility

Leadership is not about being certain

Sometimes, it is normal to not have answers to problems or be indecisive. Leadership is undoubtedly about guidance, but it is more about encouraging people to think and find solutions when you are not in the room. Leadership development programs train leaders to tackle the fear of not knowing everything and avoid perfectionism.

Stop trying to prove you deserve the position

Do employees test your personal limits and competency? Or does a client get angry when you refuse to do more? Don’t let these instances make you feel insecure and offer extra. Leadership is defined by empathy and accountability, not submission. Focus on understanding their concern rather than coming under pressure and proving your worth.

Ask for your team’s perspective

Your job is to facilitate things among your team. As you are working for the team, ask for their perspective and plan accordingly. Have you encountered a non-engagement signal? Feedback, support, autonomy, and clear communication establish a strong relationship between you and the team.

Empower your team

Does your team have the autonomy to make decisions without a leader? You can’t always be there to guide your team, especially when there is pressure and tons of deadlines; therefore, they must have the independence to make certain decisions themselves.

Measure your success from the team’s performance

Successful leadership is reflected in a team’s performance and how well they handle customers. Instead of being doubtful about your ability to lead, observe how your team works and interacts.

Build your confidence by making an effort

Nobody is born to lead; those skills can be developed by small efforts, and this is where leadership development programs come in. LDPs are based on behavioral frameworks and psychological concepts that help you become an empathetic and effective leader.

Can your team work in the absence of a mentor or script?

Is your team independent or dependent? Do they think or just follow procedures and scripts? 75% of global consumers have reportedly said that they expect human, logical interaction from the brands they buy as the technology dominates every corner of life. A script may help to keep the interaction under control and aligned with company policies, but are they trained enough to handle unexpected situations?

Many companies are moving away from scripts to make good communication and essential skills like problem-solving and critical thinking a part of their habit. A script doesn’t address individual issues or exhibit empathy, which customers expect during the conversation. Training activities for customer service include exercises where there are no obvious answers, and employees have to use their presence of mind to solve the issue. Similarly, when it comes to a team, employees must develop:

Situational awareness - “This customer needs immediate help”

Boundaries- “I must not make fake promises, and only offer realistic solutions”

Ownership- “How can I solve this problem”

Conflict de-escalation- “Let’s focus on our goals”

Pressure handling- “This is not a personal attack; I won’t be influenced by others’ emotions”

What should leadership development programs include?

Modern leadership development programs are now structured to make leadership skills part of a personality. Previously, these programs provided rigid answers to a handful of questions rather than handling unpredictable situations. New frameworks help leaders to address common corporate issues and overcome the challenges that hinder their success. This is what programs include:

  1. Scenario-based training- In leadership coaching, leaders are put in complex workplace simulations so they can practise the skills in front of the trainers.

  2. Handle difficult situations- Conflict de-escalation, calming an angry client, and meeting urgent deadlines are stressful situations where a leader is expected to remain calm and direct things toward a solution.

  3. When not to solve problems-  Leaders are taught the real meaning of leadership and their actual role rather than just being a supervisor. The training tells them how to work with the team.

  4. Empathy-  Active listening, perspective swap, and other exercises are used to develop empathy.

FAQs

  1. What is leadership coaching, and how can it benefit individuals and organizations?

Leadership coaching is a program that helps leaders to clarify goals, be self-aware, and strengthen their leadership behaviour. With stronger leadership, organizations plan and function better, which shows in team performance and collaboration.

  1. How can customer service representatives be trained to handle emergencies and crises?

Effective crisis training includes deep knowledge of emergencies and crises, clear procedures, practical skills, and realistic practice. CSRs must also possess skills like de-escalation, emotional regulation, empathy, and active listening.

  1. How can leadership coaching accelerate your career growth?

If you are confused about your goals, then leadership coaching can redirect you and your team toward the right path. The programs include skill development, candid feedback, executive presence, and stronger communication.

  1. How do I know whether I need executive coaching, leadership coaching, or personal coaching?

It depends on your position and what you are willing to learn. Executive coaching is for C-suite, senior VPs, directors, and high-potential leaders; leadership coaching is for managers, team leads, and mid-level leaders; and personal coaching is for anyone who wants to work on their goals, habits, work-life balance, confidence, and career direction.

  1. What skills should be included in leadership training programs?

Strong and effective leadership development programs must cover communication, active listening, conflict resolution, inclusive leadership, critical thinking, and real-world application and practice.
